Dr. Carlos Canas is a physical geographer with an established career in the study of freshwater environments. He has worked in the Amazon Basin for 20 years as part of Peruvian and international working groups composed of NGOs, museums, and universities. This association of private sector & academia developed basic and applied research that was reflected on scientific papers, guidelines for local fishery management, wetland policy, and educational material for freshwater conservation. Currently, Carlos works at the Saint Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) as Field Program Supervisor within the Bureau of Water Resource Information. Here he leads and conducts the hydrologic data collection across the entire St. Johns River Basin combining technology (telemetry) and field work (periodic calibration of electronic sensors). His efforts are focused on the generation of the highest quality data on water levels (lakes and groundwater), precipitation, and discharge (creeks, springs, and major tributaries), essential information in the decision making of flood control, water supply and protection of freshwater ecosystems in the state of Florida.
