Faculty members and students in Geography have many affiliations with Centers and Institutes on the UF Campus:
- UF Water Institute In recognition of the importance of water issues and the need to address them in a new interdisciplinary manner, the University of Florida (UF) established a campus-wide interdisciplinary Water Institute in May 2006.
- Florida Climate Institue The Florida Climate Institute (FCI), is a multi-disciplinary network of national and international research and public organizations, scientists, and individuals concerned with achieving a better understanding of climate variability and change. The FCI was initially founded in 2010 by the University of Florida and the Florida State University.
- Emerging Pathogens Institute New and re-emerging diseases threaten Florida’s tourism, health and economy, which are particularly vulnerable due to the state’s mild climate and diverse agriculture. Weather patterns, commercial plant imports, and annual global visitors all have the potential to unsuspectingly carry pathogens from other countries into our state. The Emerging Pathogens Institute fuses key disciplines to develop research, education, and outreach capabilities designed to preserve Florida’s health and economy, and to prevent or contain new and re-emerging diseases.
- Center for African Studies The Center for African Studies is in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Florida. As a National Resource Center for African Studies, their mission is to promote excellence in teaching and research on Africa in all the disciplines at the University of Florida. The Center also disseminates knowledge about Africa to the wider community through an integrated outreach program to schools, colleges, community groups, and businesses.
- Center for Latin American Studies The Center’s mission is to advance knowledge about Latin America and the Caribbean and its peoples throughout the Hemisphere, and to enhance the scope and quality of research, teaching, and outreach in Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies at the University of Florida.
- The Land Use and Environmental Change Institute (L.U.E.C.I.) facilitates interdisciplinary research and teaching on complex interactions among climate, humans, and the environment. LUECI supports research on environmental changes caused by natural phenomena (e.g. climate, volcanic eruptions, fires) and human activities (e.g. deforestation, erosion, pollution, introduction of exotic biota). The state-of-the-art LUECI laboratories (open to all students and faculty who have interests in climate-environment-human interactions) foster collaborative research among individuals from diverse disciplines.
- The School of Natural Resources and Environment (S.N.R.E.) provides interdisciplinary education in environmental and ecological science, preparing tomorrow’s scientists, managers, and leaders to integrate disciplines for securing the human life-support system. SNRE degrees access faculty and courses in 13 UF colleges, providing “whole knowledge” needed to address complex challenges.
