Coming in 2024: Meteorology

Text on the left says, "Coming in 2024." Text on the right says, "Meteorology." The text is on solid blue backgrounds. A symbol in white is on the right that depicts a sun, a cloud, raindrops, and an alligator, and says "U. F. Meteorology" across the bottom. The top has a picture of clouds.

The Department of Geography is excited to announce the Bachelor of Science program in Meteorology has been approved and will begin in Fall 2024.

The evolving weather, water, and climate enterprise requires the next generation of atmospheric scientists. Our program provides broader geographic training and aims to build skills that crosscut from meteorology to applied climate science, geospatial analysis, hydrology, business, economics, communications, and artificial intelligence.

Beyond traditional temperature and rain forecasting, a diversity of fields now require meteorology and climate expertise. These include agriculture, business and economics, disaster risk and emergency management, energy creation and distribution, engineering, national security, political science and policy development, tourism, transportation, and water resource management.

There will be three specializations within the program, with each designed to provide coursework that best prepares students for their meteorological career.

The program is already highly anticipated by current students and is increasingly being discovered by high school students interested in a meteorology career. We can’t wait to celebrate with our first graduating classes!

Students who want more information should contact Stephen Mullens.

Three text boxes are on a background that shows a globe. The first box says, "General Atmospheric Science. This specialization is intended for students interested in a career in the public sector, the National Weather Service, or academia and research." The second box says, "Applied Meteorology, Hazards, and Global Change. This specialization is intended for students interested in a career in the private sector in a variety of industries." The third box says, "Broadcast Meteorology. This specialization is intended for students interested in communicating weather, climate, and environmental news through television, radio, digital news, and social media." At the bottom, it says, "More information. Undergraduate Meteorology Coordinator. Stephen Mullens. Stephen dot Mullens at u.f.l. dot e.d.u."
