UF Geography Students Shine at 2023 SEDAAG Meeting in Norfolk, VA

The University of Florida’s Geography Department marked a significant milestone at the 2023 Southeastern Division of the American Association of Geographers (SEDAAG) meeting held in Norfolk, VA. This year’s conference, hosted at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel from November 18-20, witnessed an unprecedented participation from UF, with 18 students attending, thanks to the generous contributions from UF’s Giving Day.

The attendance of such a large contingent of students from UF at this prestigious event highlights the department’s commitment to fostering academic growth and professional development among its students. The SEDAAG meeting, a crucial event in the geographical academic calendar, provided our students with a unique platform to engage with the latest research, exchange ideas, and network with professionals and peers from the field.

This year’s successful participation was made possible by the over $7,000 raised during the last UF Giving Day, which went towards several key initiatives, including graduate student awards and supporting student attendance at significant conferences like SEDAAG. By covering the hotel costs and travel expenses, the department ensured that financial constraints did not hinder the opportunities for its students to gain valuable experience and exposure.

The students, ranging from undergraduates to PhD candidates, had the opportunity to present their research, attend workshops, and participate in panel discussions. This experience not only enriched their academic knowledge but also enhanced their communication and presentation skills, preparing them for future academic and professional pursuits.

The Geography Department at UF takes immense pride in the achievements and participation of its students at the SEDAAG meeting. This accomplishment is a testament to the department’s dedication to providing comprehensive educational experiences and the invaluable support of the community through initiatives like UF Giving Day.

Looking ahead, the department is inspired by this year’s success and is committed to continuing to support and encourage student participation in such significant events, underscoring its role in shaping the future leaders of geographical research and practice.
