CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2024 RYAN POEHLING FELLOWSHIP AWARD WINNERS!

The Awards Committee has selected this year’s graduate student winners for the Ryan M. Poehling 2024 Memorial Fellowship. This is our highest honor for our graduate students and all students must be nominated by a faculty member to be considered. The award winners will be recognized at the Spring Annual Evening of Excellence celebration. The winners each receive a $2,000 award and will have their names added to the Award Plaques in the main office.

The PhD Student winner is: Tan Luong

Tan is a Ph.D. student at the Department of Geography, University of Florida. He earned a master’s in public health from the Royal Tropical Institute in the Netherlands. Tan is a medical geographer and infectious disease epidemiologist with almost 14 years working in Southeast Asia. His research focuses on the spatiotemporal epidemiology of zoonoses (diseases transmitted from animals to humans) and antimicrobial resistance, the intersecting problems with significant health and global economic impacts. His doctoral studies employ an ecological niche modeling approach within a machine learning and GeoAI framework, social-spatial network modeling, and statistical modeling methods to investigate anthrax patterns and disease control policies in Vietnam. He was also a graduate student representative in the Student Services Committee of the Department of Geography in 2022-2023.

The Masters Student Winner is: Mashoukur Rahaman

Mashouk is a master’s student in UF’s department of Geography. He graduated from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) with a Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning in 2020. His primary areas of interest include addressing critical issues pertaining to agriculture, environmental hazards, and urban dynamics through the application of machine learning, remote sensing, and geospatial data science. He frequently supports geospatial and data science endeavors through the analysis, modeling, and visualization of diverse categories of data using programming languages and GIS software. His ongoing research encompasses an extensive variety of deep learning and machine learning algorithms. Furthermore, he intends to look deeper into the intersection of artificial intelligence and geography. He will pursue a doctorate and further his research endeavors.
