Sad news on the passing of our former colleague Dr. César Caviedes. He was an amazing friend and colleague and will be greatly missed.
Dr. Caviedes was an emeritus professor with the UF Geography Department. César retired in 2003 after a long and illustrious career where he focused on Latin America, Political Geography, and multiple facets of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
He arrived at the University of Florida in 1976 and served as our department’s chair in 1995-1999. In addition to his research, César advanced the fields of Latin American Studies and Human and Physical Geography by serving on the editorial boards for several publications. He authored or contributed to several books, book chapters, and monographs. He also served as committee chair for at least 11 doctoral students and 11 masters students, helping them launch their own careers. He was 86.
