Abstract: A spatial social network (SSN) can be defined as a structure where nodes (people, organizations) are embedded in geographic space, and edges connect nodes over geographic space to signify a relationship. I will describe case studies and methods for embedding spatial social networks in geographic space as well as some new and existing metrics for describing SSNs. I will also share a new exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) visualization tool. This tool and related research includes new approaches for detecting where power is situated, where social clusters are located, and where missed connections occur in geographic space. Case studies include Mafia associations in 1960s America, the U.S. flight system, and the Thrive Food Sharing Network in Southwestern Virginia.
Biography: Clio Andris is an associate professor in the School of City and Regional Planning and the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech.
