Geography Colloquium: Managing Urban Stormwater with Novel Nature-based Solutions: Why Community Perception and Everyday Landscape Experiences Matter

Abstract: Cities are exploring novel nature-based solutions (NBS) that integrate engineering and technological components with natural processes for climate change adaptation. In this talk, I call attention to a rarely considered implication of novel NBS—how they may introduce noticeable yet unfamiliar changes and affect how people perceive everyday urban landscapes. I will present two studies on community members’ perceptions of novel NBS for stormwater management. The study results indicate that 1) microscale design choices and resulted landscape appearance can greatly affect community members’ perceptions of NBS practices; and 2) past experiences of localized flooding may also perceptions of different types of NBS. A deeper understanding of everyday landscape experiences will help us develop NBS that can support community members’ well-being and gain local support for adoption.

Biography: Dr. Jiayang Li is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersection of landscape design and climate change adaptation. Her research tackles the challenge of creating landscape change that makes communities more resilient and is welcomed by community members. Jiayang earned her Ph.D. in Environment and Sustainability and Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan. Before turning her primary focus to research, she had practiced in design firms including SmithGroup and AECOM.
