Abstract: The western US has dominated irrigated agriculture, but ongoing water availability issues have challenged the sustainability of these regions. Many technological innovations have been introduced in recent decades to improve water use efficiency, though these advances are starting to drive the evolution of irrigated agriculture nationwide through interesting socioenvironmental dynamics. This presentation showcases how technological innovation is shaping the future of US irrigation and demonstrates how a combination of historical records, big data applications, and geospatial mapping can be used to build more informed management plans.

Biography: Sam Smidt is an Assistant Professor of watershed sciences in the Department of Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Florida.
