Abstract: The Maya lowlands, extending from the Yucatan to Chiapas, offer a compelling long-term landscape narrative of settlement ecology. From the emergence of cities, to how landscapes were transformed to meet the demands of an increasingly urbanized landscape our ongoing research examines how households, communities, and landscapes were transformed and were resilient across this nearly 3,000 year history and how regional ecological systems influenced patterns of settlement, land use and intensification. This colloquium will introduce and describe our ongoing research to integrate remote sensing, drone lidar surveys, and traditional fieldwork to better document this critical landscape narrative and discuss some current papers we are working on.

Biography: An anthropologist, landscape archaeologist, and design educator studying the coupled natural human systems in the lowlands of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, particularly the dynamics of settlement patterns and landscape history.
