Abstract:

Geographic web tools and location tagging of online information has created novel ways researchers could collect data to inform studies.  This collection of web-based geographic information is known as Neogeography, and in general, is seen as a departure from traditional mapping.  Instead of experts collecting data, today’s web tools look towards map users to create spatial information.   From natural disasters to social media updates, our collective digital footprint generates a lot of information about our world. This footprint of data is known as Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). This talk examines through case studies the advantages and limitation of using Neogeographic approaches to collect data, and furthermore looks to how these tools can be scaled down to research teams to create collaborative data collection frameworks.

All are welcome to attend.
