Emerita Professor Dr. Barbara McDade-Gordon was recently featured in
American Geographical Society‘s Celebrating Black Geographers the First Cohort: 1900-2000.
Professor McDade Gordon was a faculty member in the Geography Department at the University of Florida Gainesville. Before her retirement in 2016, she was a faculty affiliate of the Center for African Studies and the African American Studies Program. Her academic career began in 1990 at the University of Florida, where she remained for her entire career. Dr. McDade Gordon’s specialties were economic and cultural geography, with a particular focus on Africa. She studied the development and viability of traditional and modern African businesses. She is author, editor, or co-editor of several refereed articles, book chapters, and the book, African Entrepreneurship: Theory & Reality. She was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Ghana in the Department of Geography and Resource Development. She maintained an active interest in youth development and served as Director of the Upward Bound Program from 2004-2012.
