Our Senior Profile for UF Geography today features GeoGator Nicholas Yi Qing Kam

Future Plans:
I’ve applied for the Geography graduate program here at UF, however, due to COVID-19, the decision may be delayed. If the grad program doesn’t work out, then I can find a temporary job and reapply at UF again or somewhere else in the future.

What is your favorite thing from your time at UF?
Perhaps experiencing a whole other culture almost completely different than the one from my home in Hong Kong.

What was your favorite Geography class?
People and Plagues taught by Prof. Hamerlinck. It was both interesting and engaging!

What is your favorite Geography memory?
Listening to Prof. Fik’s jokes and stories in his Intro to Quant. Analysis course

In what ways has Geography prepared you for your next steps?
Geography has given me a bigger view of this world with the many other scientific branches it can connect with. It has also taught me useful skills such as using GIS or creating different types of maps and using different types of analyses.

What would your ideal job be?
My ideal job and goal would be something that could combine both Geography as well as one of my personal passions. Working at a zoological or Natural Science facility would be something I would definitely pursue in the future.

What will you miss most about Gainesville/UF?
Probably hearing the massive cheers from The Swamp as the Florida Gators score a touchdown during game days. That or sometimes getting UberEats for dinner after a long day of learning.

What will you miss least about Gainesville/UF?
Flying to Gainesville from Hong Kong and back was exhausting.

What well wishes or words of wisdom would you like to share with your classmates and fellow students?
The fact that you’ve made it to graduation is proof that you’ve matured and grown over the last four years. Other than that, some words of wisdom that I have is this: Oranges DO belong in salads! Don’t let other people’s opinions change your way of life! Stick out like a sore thumb instead of being enclosed in a fist!

UF Geography wishes Nicholas and all our graduating seniors all the best as they embark on their next journey. Congratulations from all our GeoGator family and please be sure to stay in touch! #Geogators, #UFGEOG, #CLASGrads2020
