2007 PhD graduate appointed Associate Director at CU

Joel Hartter has been appointed Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of
Colorado at Boulder beginning in spring 2014. At CU, Joel will continue his
work focusing on human-environment interactions, primarily in the American West
and Sub-Saharan Africa where he directs two ongoing projects funded by the USDA
and NSF. Joel has also been appointed Associate Director for Professional
Education in Environmental Studies, where he will oversee the development and
implementation of a new professional master’s program. Prior to CU, Joel was
the Roland H. O’Neil Professor and was an Assistant/Associate Professor in
Geography and also a Faculty Fellow at the Carsey Institute from 2007-2013.
Joel received his PhD in Geography in 2007, was a Foreign Language and Area
Studies Fellow three times 2004-2007, and was an active member of the ! LUECI
lab.
