GEO3930 Data, Maps & Deception

Learn how to identify and call out fake news!

Our world is rife with misinformation. This is a course that will hone your digital citizenship skills. It is about spotting, dissecting, and refuting false claims and inferences based on quantitative, statistical, and computational analysis of data and maps. We will explore case studies in policy and science, including gerrymandering, effects of climate changes, and improving traffic. Information and mapping skills fostered in the course include spotting misinformation, causal fallacies, statistical traps, data visualization, big data, interpreting scientific claims, fake news and social media, and refutation techniques. This course will introduce students to data visualization and presentation.

Class periods will have short lectures, individual and group activities, and discussions. As an introductory and interdisciplinary course, everyone is welcome. No pre-reqs and no required textbooks.

Fall 2020 MWF 1:55-2:45pm synchronous online class meetings.
